In our ongoing blog “Did You Know?” series, we feature items that can help you build healthy habits. In this story, we feature the game of pool. Invented at the turn of the century in 1900, billiards refers to all games played on a billiard table, and Norterre features one in our Aurora Welcome Reception area. But, you may not be aware of all the health benefits of pool:

1. Helps to build focus – based on a game of focus and concentration, which helps to stimulate the part of your brain that is essential in achieving objectives and attaining goals
2. Burns calories – a surprising amount of beneficial walking is required in a thirty-minute game of pool, a typical game of pool can burn up to 238 calories without tremendous effort
3. Enables stretching and balance – a game of pool enables stretching across the table top to reach the cue ball at certain angles to make the shot and
4. Helps to build patience and control – a certain degree of level-headed concentration is needed to think clearly and logically, with a degree of patience needed to focus on making the shot
5. Sharpens the mind – using mental math and calculations in physics based on geometry uses another part of the brain that stimulates logical thinking
6. Hones hand-eye coordination – another critical factor in making the right angles for the right shots, your hand and eye coordinates with precision as your mind factors the equation of lining up the cue stick with the ball and the pocket
7. Tones muscle – the physical benefits of playing pool include low-impact toning of the back, hip, and leg muscles with continuous bending and reaching to facilitate the hand/arm setups needed to make the shots work
8. Improves cognitive skills – the mental stimulation of pool is virtually limitless in that the shots are constantly moving and the brain must call upon visualization and creative problem solving skills
